How to Interview Candidates Remotely In many cases, getting every candidate on your recruitment shortlist in for a face-to-face interview just isn’t feasible. Telephone or video interviews can often be a quicker and less complex process, usually giving more flexibility for both the employer and the candidate. Particularly in roles with a large applicant pool, a telephone, or conference call based interview can be a great tool to start your process of narrowing down a shortlist. Despite this, without proper planning and coordination, interviewing over the phone can add little value, disrupt your evaluation process and potentially lead to you missing out on top-talent for your business. With this in mind, Aaron Wallis Marketing Recruitment has collated a series of tips for employers to get the most out of a telephone or video interview. It’s often useful to take 15 minutes out before the interview to get your notes and surroundings in order, as well as making sure your technology will work! Have an Objective To make your telephone or video interviews as efficient as possible, plan ahead and think about exactly what you need to hear from a candidate for them to advance to the next stage of the process. Refer back to your person and job specifications and decide which are the most important factors of a candidate’s suitability or capability. This will help guide the questions you’ll ask during the interview. Plan Your Questions The best telephone or video interviews are conversational and free-flowing, giving both the employer and the candidate the flexibility to explore if it is a good fit. Despite this, having a planned structure will eliminate any lapses in the discussion, as well as ultimately allowing you as an employer to get what you need out of the interview. The average telephone interview is around 30 minutes, so it can be useful to have around 5-10 questions planned ahead. Who’s Calling Who? Make sure you’ve properly communicated the agreed time and contact details for the interview. There’s not much worse than both parties waiting for one to call the other, which could set a negative tone for the interview. As the employer, it can be a good idea to lead the exchange by agreeing that you’ll call the candidate first. Prepare Your Environment Where you conduct a telephone interview can make a big difference. If possible, try to book out a room where you won’t be disturbed and let your colleagues know that you’re busy whilst the interview takes place. Removing any noise disturbances will ensure that the interview runs smoothly and there are no awkward blips in communication. Equally, if carrying out a video interview, try to create a neutral environment where the candidate won’t be distracted by anything happening in the background of their screen. Put the Candidate at Ease Telephone or Skype interviews can feel awkward at times, its a lot harder to pick up on body language cues which can make candidates feel under even more pressure and bring out their nerves. Give the candidate the opportunity to shine by starting with some small-talk and ‘ease-in’ questions which will allow the interview to flow a lot more smoothly. If possible, leave the trickier questions to the later stages of the interview, where the candidate will have had a better chance to settle into the situation. 7 Tips for Surviving as a Recruiter Today How does a recruiter not only survive but actually thrive in today’s climate where most markets and sectors are saturated, where there is an ever-changing threat from social media and internal recruiters strategically placed to cut recruitment costs. How do you ensure your stay ahead of your game and become that “go to” person that is trusted and well-connected; equally, happy and content in yourself? Recruitment evolves like any other sector and it is hard to predict what future trend will dominate the chat forums job boards were regarded as the greatest threat to our sector in the noughties, internal recruiters this decade, is AI the next threat to our sector? Regardless, the reason I am typing this as a recruiter who is finishing their second decade in recruitment is that whatever happens, people will still want to deal with people in their quest for a new role or to find them their next employee. This is not a naive and utopian ideal. Much in the same way as those who like to diagnose medical conditions on google, seeing a doctor in the flesh to properly ascertain a diagnosis is the only way you can feel reassured. So my top tips to recruiters who want to become the top of their sectors: 1. Keep it real Have empathy with your customers. Remember what it felt like the last time you were a candidate. What did you learn from recruitment processes: think about what made you impressed with your recruiter and mimic their behaviours and even improve upon it. If you have hired staff before, think about the psychology your hiring client will go through so you can demonstrate an understanding of the process they have to go through. Dont try and be something fake. 2. Communicate No news IS news. As frustrating as it seems, when a candidate is waiting to hear whether they got the job, it takes just a few moments to call a candidate and dare I say it, keep them warm. Often, decision makers are involved in business critical decisions in addition to recruitment and so they will sometimes be delayed in coming back. By keeping in touch even to say, “I havent heard yet but when I do hear you will be the first to know”, builds trust and respect for the job you are trying to do 3. Authentic There is no such thing as one size fits all yes there is a protocol and a process that all recruiters (should) follow. But the best recruiters add their own style and finesse, as any singer has their own original sound, a dance has their own flair: a recruiter should have their own unique style of behaving and an honest and genuine approach is always the best way to win the trust of customers. 4. Endorse Ask to be endorsed by your customers/candidates who are now excelling in their roles: clients who have hired their best employees from you. Reciprocal endorsement takes time but shows how much you value THEIR relationship with you too. 5. Use your feet With unethical or poorly regarded customers. Dont put up with bad practise from a client who behaves without the best interests of its staff. Equally, don’t be afraid to tell candidates who don’t mirror your values that you won’t be helping them in their new roles. 6. Social media guru Experiment and then embrace all forms of social media that are appropriate to your audience. Get ahead of the curve. Dont replicate your competition but be aware. Be original with your content and spend time investing in your audience numbers. 7. Be a host with the most Get in front of your audience by engaging with them face to face. Host an industry relevant event, with inspirational speakers. Invite the best customers to dinner. We can try to be like everyone else or try to have our site like everyone else and never just start producing our own unique content and helping people. 2 years ago I picked up the pace and I stopped reading. I only listened to one podcast. Here are two things I recommend if this is you: Unsubscribe. Unfollow and delete. Stop reading. Stop listening to all the podcasts. Stop consuming. Create. Create. Create. Before you listen to anyone else. Create. I don’t care if you stop listening to me and my podcasts. That means you are taking action. Set a schedule. Are you helping one person every day? Are you hearing thank you every day? I am doing FB Lives every day have you noticed? I was asked what book I am reading on a podcast interview the other day and I said I ‘m not reading a book, I don’t have time because 1) I am taking a course an can only focus on one thing at a time so daily I am listening and studying that course. 2) I am creating!! Myself!! My own content!! Have you seen how much stuff we publish, a weekly video on youtube, two times a week podcast. A few blog posts per week. Now a daily FB Live. I am in my community answering questions every single day. There is a time to learn. But, I am learning what my market needs and teaching and sharing with them what they need to know. Heres Why We Remain Stuck In Careers We Hate - 8 Essential Reasons Speaking with people every day who are in careers or jobs they hate, I’ve asked myself, “How did we get here?   How has it happened that so many thousands of people have become despondent, angry and lost about what they do for a living?” Clearly, there are many factors at play here, including the rise of technology â€" that makes setting boundaries around our professional lives virtually impossible.   Further, in the past 30 years, we’ve become slaves to the almighty dollar, addicted to acquiring things we can’t afford, which keeps us working longer and harder just to break even.   And, the cost of living is so high for so many, that just making ends meet is tough.   Additionally, many people have jumped into jobs or fields early in their careers, only to discover 10 or 20 years later that they can’t break free. But I believe there are even deeper reasons for this epidemic of people hating what they do each day for their living.   These reasons touch on underlying emotional, spiritual and behavioral conditions, and reveal a deep disconnection to what it means to live joyfully, authentically, and meaningfully. By the way, I’m fully prepared to receive comments on this post that debunk it, such as: “Yeah sure, Kathy, you can talk about having a meaningful career, but I’m a single parent with two kids and can’t afford the luxury of liking my work.” Or: “This is nonsense â€" work is work, and you should change your expectations if you think you’re going to love it.” I’ve heard these types of comments by the hundreds. I learned as a therapist that when people feel completely stuck, they get angry and defensive â€" like a caged animal.   They experience themselves as victimized and backed into a tight, dark corner.   They just can’t see a way out.   But from my vantage point (and after reinventing my career from miserable corporate VP to supremely fulfilled coach, consultant and business owner), there is always a way out; there are always new options and solutions but often we just cant see them.   Anyone and everyone can make their lives better, more satisfying, more enjoyable, but only if you believe that having more fulfillment or joy in your life or career is a goal worth trying for and within your reach (eventually). Based on feedback I’ve received from thousands of professionals here and abroad, I’ve observed the following eight core reasons why people remain stuck in careers they hate.   As I share these, please know I’m not sitting in judgment of any of these; in fact, I’ve lived through each and every one of these conditions. 1. You don’t know yourself deeply enough The vast majority of people I see in the workplace just don’t know themselves at all.   When asked, “What’s your top priority in life and in your career?   What would you give up anything for?” or “When you’re 90 looking back, what do you want to have done, been, and left behind?  â€ I get blank stares and mouths hanging open.   People don’t know themselves well or deeply today.    Why?   Perhaps we don’t make time in our lives to get to know ourselves â€" we’re just too over-the-top busy.   Or perhaps the process of knowing oneself deeply is intimidating and scary.   Whatever the reason â€" if you don’t know who you are, at your core, and what you stand for and care about, how can you lead a life that aligns with your needs, values, and interests? You know yourself, but you make yourself wrong Ive seen that women in particular might know themselves and identify what they want, but they make themselves wrong about it.   They tell themselves, “Yeah, I want to change, but I’m wrong or foolish (or selfish) to feel that way.”   Or “I’m lucky to have a job, so I shouldn’t rock the boat” or “I have so much â€" I should just feel blessed and not complain.”   So many people (women in particular) doubt the validity of their feelings or repress their deepest longings because they think they’re wrong to have them.   Until you can make yourself “right” about what you feel, you wont find peace or joy. 3. You’ve lost the courage to act For many who know what they want, they’ve lost the courage to take BOLD action.   We’ve been seduced by some misguided concept that life should always be easy.   Where did we get that idea?   Making change is never easy (its scary and threatens the status quo), but it’s so worth it, especially if you hate where you are today. You’ve prioritized outer “rewards” (or other peoples needs) over your own happiness This reason is yours if you can answer “Yes” to this question: “Are you staying in a career that makes you miserable solely because you think it’s the only one that will keep paying you what you want?”   If money is keeping you stuck, it’s time you think about prioritizing your happiness over your checkbook.   How much money do you truly need?   Is your current lifestyle so important to you that you’d trade it over your health, happiness, relationship, and your well-being?   Of course you have to pay your bills and meet your financial obligations â€" I’m not suggesting for a minute that you don’t.   I am however recommending that you revisit how you live and what you truly need.   Meeting your financial obligations doesn’t have to mean that you have to be angry, thwarted, unhappy and sick for the rest of your life. 5. You’ve been brainwashed by the myth that youll go broke if you pursue work you love There’s a prevalent myth in the U.S. today that if you pursue your passions and do rewarding work, youll go broke. Another version of this damaging myth is that work is supposed to be grueling, challenging and unsatisfying.   We look at people who love their work and we hate them.   We say, “Yeah, she’s doing what she wants to, but that’s because she was (lucky, born into it, inherited money, beautiful, privileged, etc.)   And I can’t do that because ___.”   We give ourselves thousands of reasons why loving what we do professionally just isn’t in the cards for us.   We do that because it’s too painful for us to watch other people thrive and adore their work.   We want it to be impossible because it seems so unattainable and so far away from us. 6. Your emotional overwhelm sabotages you Every day I see individuals who are highly competent, smart, achievement oriented and outwardly successful, but are in terrible emotional overwhelm â€" they’re gripped by anxiety, fear, feeling victimized, and they lack the ability to speak up authoritatively or with command.   They’re in a constant state of paralyzing emotional overwhelm.   The emotionality of their lives keeps them from reasoning through effective solutions and strategies, or finding the physical energy to make a change. 7. Your shame and vulnerability keep you from getting help One of my favorite author/speakers â€" Brene Brown â€" is a shame and vulnerability researcher (don’t miss her great TED Talk here.)   She shares her findings that vulnerability is at the heart of living life full out.   If we’re afraid of appearing and feeling vulnerable, then we blunt all of the other experiences/emotions we desperately long for, including happiness, connection, empathy, love and more. Further, if you need to appear the “expert” and won’t admit your flaws, foibles, or “gaps,” you’ll never get the help you need to make life change.   As Einstein has said, “You can’t solve a problem on the level of consciousness that created it.” 8. You’ve forgotten what career bliss, and true happiness, feel like Finally, the most depressing reason of all is that you’ve simply forgotten what it feels like to be happy and joyful in your work.   You can’t remember the last time you said about your work, “That was a great day well spent!”   or What a joy to do this work! We all strive so hard to achieve, win, or survive â€" and we’re so beaten down by it â€" that many have lost touch with what true joy feels and looks like, and we’ve forgotten to want it. If any of these reasons resonate for you, there’s only one choice to make â€" stay put in your misery or make a bold change. It’s truly that simple â€" not easy, certainly, but simple. Treasure Map Your Way to a New Job! If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to find a  new  job, to help you keep your resolution, make a treasure map or vision board. A treasure map or vision board is a graphic representation of pictures and words representing the goals you want to achieve. You can paste your pictures on a manila folder, poster, or paper. Then, from magazines, cut pictures and words describing your next job. You can even draw your own pictures or create them using a computer. Examples include a picture of a smiling employee behind a desk; stacks of money; and the words, fulfillment, achievement, and satisfaction. The key issue is to place your vision board in a place where you see it often and embed the images in your mind as a form of positive thinking. When you are specific about what you want, reality conforms to your view of it. Don’t believe the technique works? Just ask people who use this it to tell you their stories. One woman used this technique to help her think positively about her upcoming operation. As a picture of vitality, she chose a picture of a French Can-Can dancer kicking her leg high in the air. Not only was her operation a success, but later in the year, she unexpectedly had the opportunity to travel to France. As the old saying goes, be careful of what you ask, for you just may get it.
